# Earth auger buying guide: engine size, bit diameter and soil type

Published 2026-08-19 by the Arbora export team.

**Short answer:** Match the engine to the bit and the ground. A 43cc auger is right for bits up to about 200 mm in loose or loamy soil. Use a 52cc auger for 200–250 mm bits and clay, and a 63cc auger for 250–300 mm bits, rocky ground or all-day contract work.

## What do the numbers on an auger mean?

- Displacement (cc): engine size. Our range covers 43cc, 51.7–52cc and 63cc.
- Power (W or kW): about 1.3–1.6 kW for 43–52cc, 2.2 kW for 63cc.
- Gear ratio: for example 34:1. A higher reduction gives more torque at the bit.
- Bit diameter: usually 100–300 mm.

## Which bit should I choose?

| Hole | Typical use | Suggested engine |
|---|---|---|
| 100–150 mm | Fence posts, stakes, ice holes | 43cc |
| 200 mm | Farm fencing, tree planting | 43–52cc |
| 250 mm | Larger posts, saplings | 52cc |
| 300 mm | Poles, foundations | 63cc |

## One-man or two-man auger?

One-man augers are lighter and fine for most fencing. Two-man frames spread the reaction torque between two operators and are safer with large bits in hard ground.

## Safety notes for operators

Keep both hands on the handles, keep feet clear of the bit and stop the engine before clearing soil. In stony ground, start at low throttle so the bit can find its way.

## Next step

Send us your typical hole size and soil type, and we will recommend an engine and bit set and quote extension rods if you need deeper holes.
